Firsts of the Fall

Today was Ella's first day of preschool. The baby is now in school. Now I know I filled out the forms last January, but this day just sprung up on us. I was all hurried this morning realizing that not only is she barely fitting into her current summer footwear of crocs and sandals, but they are also not preschool approved. So I spent the dark morning digging into her closet for the stash of fall shoes and sneaker supply. Thanks to my obsession with Converse All-Stars, we were saved.

I was worried how Ella would react. We didn't attend the orientation session, and I barely prepped her. I even forgot to move her car seat to the passenger side of the van for car line. As we walked up the sidewalk, she started pulling back on my hand and whining. Uh-oh. Turns out she just wanted to hug a few of the associate teachers along the car line route on her way to class. She ran into the Froggy room, screamed "DIS IS MY FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!" to Mrs. Betty, threw her backpack in the middle of the floor and ran to the sink where the rest of the kids were washing their hands. Because she wouldn't stop jumping up and down, all of the pictures I took were fuzzy. With all of that excitement, I couldn't find the tears.

Until my OB appointment. Of course this has nothing to do with the pregnancy except that I almost hugged my doctor for giving me a work note excusing me from night shifts. This has to do with Cazin, my amazing boy. Starting last spring, Cazin started recognizing words as well as spelling them. He occasionally points to words and will tell me, "That spells _______." Well as the nurse took my blood pressure at my OB appointment, I almost fell off of the exam table when he read a sentence perfectly out of a coloring book. "Three little piggies play in a pen." Flipped a few more pages and read, "Four fluffy sheep play in the mea...mea-dow." The nurse, doctor and I looked at him and each other in disbelief. Initially I felt elated and so proud. And then very guilty. Somewhere, sometime my middle child learned to read and I certainly could not identify when and where. His love of books and computer games has certainly aided him. One thing Cazin has on his sisters...his baby book is complete. There should be a beatitude for the middle child.

It was awesome to spend the morning with Cazin. As long as I give him the agenda for the morning, he is good to go. After we dropped the girls off at school, we went to church, doctor's appointment and then stopped by the new hospital to fill out leave paperwork and ride the elevators. I even stopped in Martha's Marketplace to buy a nursing stool since my old one was destroyed. After all of that I treated my easy-going boy to some Wendy's for lunch and an afternoon of watching Phineas and Ferb.

Jujube's excitement of the day:

Mommy! I have two things to tell you that are the best things EVER!
Wow! Wha-
One. I got treasure chest. Two. The school nurse pulled out my loose tooth!
That is great. Did it hurt?
Nope. And I got a new tooth holder. It's a tiny pink box with a picture of the tooth fairy on it. I've been waiting to tell you ALL day! (Giggling) Do you think I look like a rabbit now?

This brings Jujube's total to 8 teeth. In the blink of an eye, braces will be soon to follow.

We survived the first 3 weeks of school with no tardies and lots of excitement. Bring on the Fall!

Love the Cazin story. I felt the same way when I discovered Boss knew all his letters. I had no idea the child even knew one of them and still don't know when/how/where he learned them.

Can't believe Ellaroo is in school now. Although it does seem like a long time ago that I was holding that big baby girl when she was just a day old. She hasn't lost one ounce of cuteness since that day either. So, so, so sweet.
